Infantry, 35th Division.
Earl Sullivan had earned a Divisional Commander commendation, earlier in the war, when he took part in a successful raid on enemy lines on July 20, 1918 at Landersbach while the 35th Division was stationed in the Vosges Mountains, Alsace theater for its training: "The Division Commander takes great pleasure in citing the following-named officers and enlisted men for gallant action against the enemy in a raid on Landersbach, July 20, 1918: .........." On page 47 of the book "Heroes of the Argonne" by Charles E. Hoyt (1919) eleven men from the 137th Infantry were cited from this raid, including Earl Sullivan,
and the author reports that the raid had netted five German captives and nineteen dead.

29, indicating that the enemy had withdrawn all of his troops in the corps
zone of action except for a thin screen. The IV Corps ordered patrols sent
forward on the entire front to gain contact with the enemy, locate his front
line, and secure identifications and prisoners.
Numerous patrols sent out during the night of September 29-30 readily
gained contact along the front and confirmed the enemy order of battle. With A Co., 303rd Engineers
78th Division.

First Battalion of the 356th Infantry hurdled “G” Company
sector and made a raid on the Boche lines. In retaliation the German
artillery laid down a barrage where “G” Company had “dug
in ", causing heavy casualties among both 356th men and “G”
Company. The woods at that point were very dense and the enemy artillery
shelled them continuously, day and night.” With G Co., 353rd Infantry,
